General Information

The Child Neurology and Neurodevelopmental Disabilities Residency Programs are categorical residency programs, and a separate application to Pediatrics is not needed. Both residency programs will send out interview invitations to applicants on the universal interview offer date identified by the Child Neurology Society. 

Information for the 2024-2025 season:

• The universal interview offer date will be Oct. 10, 2024. On this date, we will release the first round of interview offers corresponding to the exact number of interview spots available. Applicants receiving an offer will be given 72 hours to respond, after which unfilled spots may be extended to other candidates at the program’s discretion.
• Two Child Neurology reserved positions are available. We have expanded our residency program and will be offering two reserved positions for the 2024-2025 season. Please review the requirements for the reserved positions in detail below. For those Reserved position applicants invited to interview, we have selected Tuesday, Oct. 15 as a special interview day. However, we will work to identify an alternate date for invited applicants unable to attend on this date.
• Basic Neuroscience Applicant Interview Dates. For those Basic Neuroscience (BNS) Pathway applicants invited to interview, there will be virtual interviews on two consecutive days. Day 1 will be with research faculty from 7mÊÓƵ (BCM) and Texas Children's Hospital Neurological Research Institute (NRI), and Day 2 will be with clinical faculty and residents from Texas Children's Hospital. Invited applicants will select one of two sessions. The first session is scheduled for Oct. 29 (day 1) and Oct. 30 (day 2), and the second session is scheduled for Nov. 28 (day 1) and Nov. 29 (day 2). These dates have been selected so that BNS applicants will have the best opportunity to meet with research leaders and department chairs from Molecular and Human Genetics, Neurology and Neuroscience at BCM and the NRI. 

Available Positions Per Year

Currently, seven positions are available per year for the Child Neurology Residency Program: three in Categorical Child Neurology, two in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities, and two in the Basic Neuroscience Research Track.

Reserved positions (after completing a full pediatrics residency) for the Child Neurology and Neurodevelopmental Disabilities Residency Program may be offered in some years. Please contact our program if you are interested in this pathway.

Categorical Child Neurology Residency

Our Categorical Child Neurology Residency Training is a five-year integrated Child Neurology Residency Program combining two consecutive years of pediatrics and three years of neurology training.

Neurodevelopmental Disabilities

Our Categorical Neurodevelopmental Disabilities Training is a six-year integrated NDD residency program combining two consecutive years of pediatrics and four years of neurodevelopmental disabilities training.

Basic Neuroscience Child Neurology

Our Categorical Basic Neuroscience Research Pathway is a five-year pathway that includes one year of pediatrics, three years of neurology training and one year of research. The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology must approve the individual neuroscience pathway for the resident to be eligible for certification upon completion of training.

Categorical Child Neurology, Neurodevelopmental Disabilities, and Basic Neuroscience Research Pathway are separate applications. However, as categorical positions, you do not need to submit a separate application to Pediatrics; our programs will coordinate these applications for you.

We participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Submit your application via the (ERAS). We do not accept applications for our residency programs outside of The Match.

Both the Child Neurology Residency Program and the General Pediatrics Residency Program will review applicants for consideration of an interview invitation.

Interviews are held October through January. Applicants not offered an interview will be notified.

In accordance with AAMC and BCM guidelines during the coronavirus pandemic, we are conducting all Residency Program Interviews online, regardless of the location of the student’s institution for the 2022-2023 Match Season. Along with meeting with the program director, faculty, and current residents, the applicants will have a virtual tour of Texas Children’s Hospital and affiliated sites. The interview experience is expected to last approximately two to three hours with time allotted for breaks.

Each applicant must:

• Be a graduate of a Liaison Committee on Medical Education accredited medical school, or
• Be a graduate of an American Osteopathic Association accredited college of osteopathic medicine, or
• Be an international medical graduate who holds a valid Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates certificate, or
• Have a full, unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. licensing jurisdiction, or
• Have completed a fifth pathway program provided by a LCME-accredited medical school.

For reserved position applicants, prerequisite training outlined as follows, which can be initiated following one of three options:

• Two years of residency training in pediatrics in the United States or Canada, or
• One PGY-1 year (as described in the Program Requirements for Residency Education in Neurology, Section I.A.1*) and one year of residency training in pediatrics; or
• One year of pediatrics plus one year of basic neuroscience training. The program director must review and determine the acceptability of these initial two years of training.
